Unlock the Secrets of the Strait: Immerse Yourself in a Musical Odyssey

Closing the Curtain on a Remarkable Season

As the curtain falls on another successful season of Music on the Strait, festival co-Artistic Director James Garlick extends a warm invitation to those who have yet to experience the magic. "If you've been meaning to check out the festival but haven't made it out yet, now's the chance to see and hear something truly special right here in Port Angeles," he enthuses.Launched in 2018 by Garlick and Richard O'Neill, the festival has become a beacon of classical music excellence, drawing talented musicians from across the globe to perform on the Olympic Peninsula. The final two concerts of the season promise to be a fitting culmination of this year's artistic journey.

A Captivating Finale: Virtuosity and Emotion Collide

Tonight's sold-out performance at Maier Hall will feature a captivating collaboration between Sequim native Richard O'Neill and renowned cellist Paul Wiancko. O'Neill will take the stage to perform American Haiku, a new duo for viola and cello composed by Wiancko, the festival's 2024 composer-in-residence. The evening will also showcase O'Neill's interpretations of works by Dohnanyi and Bach, promising a mesmerizing blend of virtuosity and emotional depth. For those unable to attend in person, a free live-stream will be available on the festival's website and Facebook page, allowing music enthusiasts from near and far to experience the magic.

A Grand Finale: Celebrating the Pinnacle of Classical Artistry

The festival's grand finale on Saturday at Field Arts & Events Hall promises to be a true celebration of classical music excellence. World-renowned pianist Joyce Yang will take center stage, captivating the audience with her renditions of solo preludes by Rachmaninov and Dvorak's "Dumky" Piano Trio.Joining Yang will be the return of cellist Efe Baltacıgil, who will perform Wiancko's inventive new work, "Closed Universe." Described by the composer as a piece exploring "escapist fantasy and a debilitating addiction to the news cycle," the work promises to take the audience on a journey through chaotic, demonic textures and moments of shimmering comfort, ultimately seeking optimism in distressing times.

Embracing the Artistic Vision: Wiancko's Residency Brings Unique Perspectives

Paul Wiancko, the festival's 2024 composer-in-residence, expressed his honor at being selected for this prestigious role. "Not only does the title signify that folks will be rehearsing and performing my music — it is also an invitation … to share my own musical hopes, dreams and philosophies with the festival's incredible artists," he said.Wiancko's participation in the festival extends beyond his role as a composer, as he will also take the stage as a cellist, allowing him to "fire on all artistic cylinders" and experience the festival's magic from multiple perspectives.

Exploring the Olympic Peninsula: A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Music

Despite the busy schedule of rehearsals and performances, Wiancko plans to immerse himself in the natural beauty of the Olympic Peninsula, with a fly-fishing session between rehearsals being his current plan. This integration of the region's stunning landscapes and the festival's captivating music promises to create a truly harmonious experience for both artists and audience members.Tickets for the Saturday finale are available on the festival's website, with discounted options for students and children. A pay-what-you-can program starting at also provides accessibility for all music enthusiasts."It's a really exciting end to our 2024 season," Garlick enthuses. "If you came out last week and experienced the fun and excitement, come back for more. And if it's your first time, please come and check it out. We'd especially love to see families experience the magic of world-class chamber music right here in Port Angeles."
